The coupling is a rubber elastic joint built into the gear that absorbs shocks and sudden jolts in the transmission, for example during start-up under load, protecting both the gear and the motor from excessive stress.

Fitted on the slicer's transmission unit, this gear transmits motion from the motor to the blade while dampening vibrations and mechanical shocks thanks to the rubber coupling, which acts as an elastic cushion between the teeth and the hub. The gear should be replaced when the teeth are visibly worn or stripped, or when the rubber coupling becomes hardened, cracked or broken: in these cases the transmission loses precision, vibration and noise increase, and other components of the motor unit risk damage.
