It is the inflatable rubber membrane/cushion located under the sealing bar: at the end of the vacuum cycle it inflates and pushes the bag against the sealing element, ensuring an even, complete seal along the whole length of the bar.
It is a wear component subjected to heat and repeated cycles: over time it cracks, punctures or loses elasticity, and the seal becomes partial or absent (the bag does not seal well). Replacing it restores a clean, reliable seal.
