When to replace it: a broken element or one leaking to ground is the most common cause of an appliance that does not heat or heats only partially, of much longer than normal heat-up times, or of the residual-current breaker tripping at switch-on. Before replacing it, check the element continuity and the insulation to the casing with a multimeter: an open circuit or a leakage confirms the fault.
